Objective: To evaluate the outcome of open prostatectomy in our setup. Methodology: This prospective descriptive study was conducted in the Department of Surgery, Liaquat University Hospital form June 2007 to December 2009. A total of 32 patients who visited OPD or emergency department with International Prostate Symptom Score of 20-35 were enrolled in this study after obtaining informed consent. Results: A total of 32 cases were selected for this study as per inclusion criteria. Among those 28 patients (87.5%) were operated by open prostatectomy with transvesical approach, while 4 patients (12.5%) had open prostatectomy with retropubic approach. Few patients had postop wound complication which include wound dehiscence which was observed in one patient (3.12%), hematuria and abscess also seen in one patient (3.12%), Seroma collection and calculi was seen in 2 patients only (6.25%). Conclusion: Open prostatectomy was found to have substantial complication as compared with other minimal invasive options available; however the morbidity can be controlled by optimizing the surgical techniques and postoperative management of patients.
