Outcome of primary closure in patients with duodenal ulcer perforation

Abstract

Objective: To study the result and outcome of primary closure in patients with duodenal ulcer perforation. Methodology: This study was carried out on 30 patients with duodenal ulcer perforation at the Department of Surgery, Liaquat university of Medical & Health Sciences, Jamshoro from August 2010 to August 2011. Informed consent was taken before inclusion of patients in the study. The related information was collected on a predesigned proforma, the privacy of patient and confidentially of data maintained at every stage of study. SPSS 17 was used for the data processing and statistical analysis. Results: Thirty patients with perforated duodenal ulcer included in the study that presented in emergency and outpatient department. Among them there were 27 males and 3 females, giving male to female ratio of 9:1.their age range was 21-61 years with mean age of 37 years for males and 55 years for females. Majority of patients were in their 4th decade of life. The dominant blood group was O+ve, 12 out of 30 (40%), among possible etiological factors the smoking was present in 11 (36.66%), and use of NSAIDS was in 8(26.66), history of dyspepsia was present in 6 (20%), all the patients was presented with pain in the epigastrium. All the patient underwent primary closure along with omentopexy. Wound infection was the major postoperative complication. It was seen in 5 (16.66%), one had leakage and wound dehiscence. Conclusion: Primary closure with omentopexy is a better technique for the repair of duodenal ulcer perforation.
