Gender distribution and frequency of factors leading to varicose leg ulcers

Abstract

Objective: To determine the gender distribution and frequency of factors leading to varicose leg ulcers. Study design: Cross sectional study. Setting: The study was conducted at departments of Dermatology, Vascular surgery and Surgery, Dow University of Health Sciences & Civil Hospital, Karachi. Duration of study: Six months from 13-01-2010 to 12-07-2010. Subjects and methods: Seventy eight patients were included who fulfilled the inclusion criteria after taking the informed consent. The SPSS version 10.0 was applied to the data. Results: There were 53 (67.95%) males and 25 (32.05%) males. The mean±SD age of patients was 51±13 years. The overall mean age at CVD onset was 33±13 years, with 37±13 years (range 15-72) for males and 31±11 years (range 16-72) for females. Varicose veins were the cause in 46 (58.97%) [32 (41.02%) in males and 14 (17.95%) in females] patients and deep vein thrombosis was the cause in 32 (41.02%) [21 (26.9%) in males and 11 (14.10%) in females]. Conclusion: Varicose vein was the commonest factor leading to varicose leg ulcers, whereas, deep venous thrombosis was present in most of the limbs with varicose leg ulcers.
