Objective: To evaluate the results of excision with primary closure of chronic pilonidal sinus in terms of duration of hospital stay, healing time, recurrence rate, postoperative complications and period off work. Methodology: Study design: Prospective comparative study. Study Setting: Department of Plastic Surgery & General Surgery, Liaquat University of Medical & Health Sciences, Jamshoro Sample size: Forty patients. Sampling technique: Non probability purposive sampling Duration of Study: December 2009 to December 2010 Data collection procedure: An informed consent was taken with detailed explanation of all possible treatment options available. Patients were briefed about the purpose of study and after obtaining informed consent they were included in the study. A predesigned proforma was used to collect all study variables. Data analysis tool: SPSS 17 was used for statistical analysis. No test of significance was used; frequencies were used to present the data. Results: A total number of 30 patients were managed for pilonidal sinus disease during the study period of 01 year, from December 2009 to December 2010. All patients reported in Out Patient Department as chronic pilonidal sinuses and some with complex and previously treated pilonidal sinuses. 18 (60%) were admitted in the hospital. The age of the patients varied from 16 to 55 years. Majority of our patients were within 2nd or 3rd decade and mean age was 25 years. Conclusion: The complication of primary closure was found to be less frequent. Hospital stay and wound healing time as well routine work off time is much shorter. This proved to be more economical and with low morbidity. Excision with primary closure seems to be more preferable method in the management of chronic pilonidal sinus.
