Abstract

Acute ischemic stroke is one of the leading causes of death and long-term disability worldwide. It occurs due to sudden interruption of cerebral blood flow, most commonly caused by thrombotic or embolic arterial occlusion. Clinical presentation varies according to the vascular territory involved and may include sudden weakness, speech disturbance, facial deviation, visual loss, altered consciousness, dizziness, or sensory deficits. Early recognition and rapid treatment are essential because timely reperfusion therapy can substantially improve neurological outcomes. This review summarizes the clinical profile, risk factors, diagnostic evaluation, acute management, complications, prognostic indicators, and outcomes of patients with acute ischemic stroke. Current evidence supports organized stroke-unit care, urgent neuroimaging, intravenous thrombolysis in eligible patients, mechanical thrombectomy for selected large-vessel occlusions, secondary prevention, rehabilitation, and long-term risk-factor control to reduce mortality and disability.
