Background: Thyroid dysfunction is a common endocrine disorder that significantly influences carbohydrate metabolism, lipid metabolism, body weight, and cardiovascular risk. Both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism have been associated with various metabolic disorders, including obesity, dyslipidemia, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes mellitus.Objective: To evaluate the association between thyroid dysfunction and metabolic disorders among adult patients attending a tertiary care hospital.Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted among 240 adult patients who underwent thyroid function testing. Clinical records, thyroid hormone profiles, fasting blood glucose, HbA1c, lipid profile, body mass index (BMI), and blood pressure were analyzed. Patients were classified as euthyroid, hypothyroid, or hyperthyroid based on thyroid function tests.Results: Among 240 participants, hypothyroidism was present in 35.8%, hyperthyroidism in 10.4%, and euthyroid status in 53.8%. Dyslipidemia was significantly more common in hypothyroid patients (69.8%) than euthyroid individuals (34.1%). Obesity was observed in 46.5% of hypothyroid patients, while metabolic syndrome was identified in 41.9%. Patients with hyperthyroidism demonstrated lower BMI but higher resting heart rates. Elevated fasting blood glucose and HbA1c were significantly associated with thyroid dysfunction.Conclusion: Thyroid dysfunction is strongly associated with metabolic abnormalities, particularly dyslipidemia, obesity, insulin resistance, and metabolic syndrome. Routine metabolic screening in patients with thyroid disorders may facilitate early diagnosis and reduce long-term cardiovascular complications.
