Abstract

Background: Viral hepatitis is a major cause of liver inflammation and hepatic dysfunction worldwide. Abnormal liver function tests are commonly observed in patients with acute and chronic viral hepatitis and help assess disease severity. Objective: To evaluate liver function abnormalities among patients diagnosed with viral hepatitis and compare biochemical patterns across different hepatitis types. Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted among 200 patients diagnosed with viral hepatitis. Demographic data, hepatitis type, and liver function test parameters including serum bilirubin, ALT, AST, alkaline phosphatase, albumin, and prothrombin time were analyzed. Results: Hepatitis B was the most common infection, observed in 42% of cases, followed by hepatitis C in 31%, hepatitis A in 18%, and hepatitis E in 9%. Elevated ALT and AST levels were seen in 86% and 82% of patients, respectively. Hyperbilirubinemia was present in 64%, hypoalbuminemia in 28%, and prolonged prothrombin time in 21% of cases. Acute hepatitis A and E showed marked transaminase elevation, while chronic hepatitis B and C showed moderate enzyme elevation with greater albumin reduction. Conclusion: Liver function abnormalities are frequent in viral hepatitis patients. Transaminase elevation is the most common abnormality, while reduced albumin and prolonged prothrombin time indicate advanced hepatic impairment. Routine liver function testing is essential for diagnosis, monitoring, and management of viral hepatitis.
